Let’s take a closer look at what exactly happens when your body gets too many carbs at one particular meal.

First, you digest the carb-containing food, breaking it down into the individual glucose molecules that are small enough to cross the cells of your intestinal walls and enter your bloodstream. Because you have eaten too many carbs, you have far too much glucose stuck in your blood. You don’t have enough insulin to move all that glucose into your cells. So what happens to that excess glucose?

Some of it is stored in your liver as a substance known as glycogen, to be released when you don’t eat. Harking back to our hunter-gatherer days, our bodies created a backup system to ensure that even if we can’t get any food for a couple of days, we won’t starve to death.

The liver can only hold so much glycogen, however. So what about the glucose that doesn’t fit? Your body has three choices:

convert the glucose into body fat, which translates into weight gain, most likely around your middle;

convert the glucose into fat that is stored in the liver, leading to a condition known as “fatty liver.”

If you overdo it on the glucose every once in a while, this process is not really so dangerous. But if you regularly eat large amounts of glucose in a single meal—even if you avoid it for the rest of the day—your body begins to adapt to these large infusions of glucose in ways that are highly problematic.

First, your body registers that you have too much glucose in your bloodstream for the amount of insulin that is there… so your pancreas starts making more insulin. Your body experiences the high insulin levels as a “stress messenger,” with two very troubling results:

Meanwhile, the inflammation produced by the excess insulin also creates extra body fat. The extra insulin in your system also leads to extra body fat. And, in a truly vicious cycle, extra body fat creates still more inflammation.

The ultimate bad end of this negative synergy is what doctors term “Syndrome X” or “Metabolic Syndrome,” in which the patient faces a quadruple threat: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, and excess weight. This creates a greatly increased risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Andrew Steptoe, from the University College London (United Kingdom), and colleagues monitored “positive affect” (states such as happiness, peacefulness and excitedness), and “negative affect” (anxiety and hostility, for example), among 3,850 people, ages 52 to 79 years, who were asked to describe their feelings — happy, excited, content, worried, anxious or fearful — four times during one 24-hour period.

Then, the team tracked the participants for the next five years, and found that over 7% of those who died were in the lowest third of those with positive affect, as compared to 6% in the third with the highest level of positive affect.

Even after ruling out confounding factors, the researchers found that those who said they were the most happy were 35% less likely to die than those who described themselves as the least happy.

The study authors conclude that: “The results endorse the value of assessing experienced affect, and the importance of evaluating interventions that promote happiness.”

Tai Chi Linked To Better Health And Longevity

body-articleA form of mind-body exercise that originated in ancient China, tai chi combines slow motion exercise and mind concentration to focus on movement.

In China, it is believed that tai chi can delay aging and prolong life, increase flexibility, strengthen muscles and tendons, and aid in the treatment of heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, digestive disorders, skin diseases, depression, cancer, and many other illnesses.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a lot of research done to scientifically support all of these claims. However, this does not mean that they are not actually true. Although, there has been one recent study where the results seem to be promising.

Xianglan Zhang, from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (Tennessee, USA), and colleagues studied data collected on over 61,000 middle-aged and elderly men in Shanghai, China. Researchers tracked their health and lifestyle for more than five years: nearly 22,000 participants reported that they exercised at least once a week, and the rest were considered non-exercisers.

Factoring in the men’s age, health conditions and whether they smoked, exercise was tied to a 20% lower likelihood of dying. Similarly, whereas 6.2% of the nearly 10,000 men who practiced tai chi died during the study, after adjusting for confounding factors the team found they were 20% less likely to die than men who didn’t exercise.

Further, the researchers observed that men who walked regularly were 23% less likely to die during the study, and men who jogged were 27% less likely to die. The study authors write that: “The present study provides the first evidence that, like walking and jogging, practicing Tai Chi is associated with reduced mortality.”

Of course, there is a lot more research that would need to be done to provide “scientific evidence” for the health benefits of Tai Chi. However, this will most likely never be done because there is no way for companies to make billions of dollars promoting it.

Most of the health benefit claims are made by people who are actually practicing Tai Chi. Of course, people in China have been observing the results of practicing Tai Chi for many generations and they believe strongly in the benefits and this new research does take a step toward supporting these claims.

Sometimes the best way to determine how effective a practice like Tai Chi can be, is to actually try it out for yourself. Who knows, you might fall in love with it like so many other people have.

In addition, there tend to be a lot of attractive women taking Tai Chi classes. So, if you are single and looking, a local Tai Chi class might be a great place to find some cute single ladies.

Omega-3s May Reduce Your Biological Age

Here is a little bit about the science and latest research:

Telomeres are the end caps of chromosomes, protecting the DNA complexes from deterioration during cell division. Telomere shortening is considered a marker of cellular aging, and prematurely shortened telomeres have been linked to increased risk of cancers, heart disease, dementia and death.

Nathan O’Callaghan, from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO; Australia), and colleagues enrolled 33 men and women, ages 65 years and older, with mild cognitive impairment, assigning each to one of 3 groups: the first group received EPA (eicopentaenoic acid) omega-3 supplements (1.67 grams EPA & 16 g DHA.day), the second group received docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 supplements (1.55 g DHA & 0.40 g EPA/day), and the third group received omega-6 linoleic acid (2.2 g/day) for six months.

The team observed that DHA reduced the shortening of telomeres, while omega-6 exerted the greatest shortening of telomere length. The study authors conclude that: “Telomeric shortening may be attenuated by [omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid] supplementation.”

Now the above information may not make a lot of sense to you and that is ok. The bottom line is that many studies are showing that omega-3s have significant health benefits and may actually reduce your biological age. Who doesn’t want a younger healthier body, right?

Numerous previous studies report that regular physical activity is associated with improved overall health, and mid-life exercise is a key anti-aging component. Mark Hamer, from the University College London (United Kingdom), and colleagues assessed data collected on 3454 healthy senior men and women, enrolled in the English Longitudinal Study of Aging.

Subjects reported how much they exercise the start of the study, with researchers following them via regular health surveys for the next eight years. At follow-up, 90% of the subjects were considered to be healthy agers as they did not develop any major chronic diseases have not experienced deterioration of their physical or mental status during the study period.

The men and women who are active at least once a week at the study’s start and remained active were the most likely to age healthily. Additionally, those who started exercising during the study period enjoy health benefits as well: they were three-times more likely than inactive adults to age well.

Overall, men and women who remain active during the full eight years of the study were over seven times more likely to be aging well. Observing that: “Sustained physical activity in older age is associated with improved overall health,” the study authors conclude that: “Significant health benefits were even seen among participants who became physically active relatively late in life.”
